“He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”. Despite having Asperger’s Syndrome, Diploma in Aerospace Electronics (DASE) graduate Lionel Lee did well in SP and was awarded the Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Foundation Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities, which recognises outstanding students with special needs. He will be studying mathematical sciences at the Nanyang Technological University.
With Asperger’s, Lionel could have been easily traumatised in an unfamiliar environment. But, he shared that the positive learning environment and helpful lecturers and classmates played an important role in helping him reach his potential – he graduated with a GPA of 3.83.
The Queenstown secondary alumnus was also the guest speaker when SP launched its Special Education Needs Centre (SEN) – the same year he graduated.
“I witnessed how the special needs advisors in SP put in their best to help students settle down. The SEN Centre provided lots of details and visuals on how to get around campus, and where to find quiet corners which is really beneficial to the special needs students,” he shares.
