I can realise my potential

Diploma in Architecture (DARCH) student Victoria Tan entered SP via the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) but the opportunity to do so did not come easy for her.

During her time in CHIJ Katong Convent, Victoria would often find that she was unable to grasp concepts as quickly as some of her friends. During her mid-terms, she only placed 28th, out of 42 people in her class. As a result, she did not receive the invitation letter given to good performers who were more likely to qualify for the programme.

She decided that she had to push herself harder and sought help from both her teachers and brother, who was also then an SP student from the Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (DARE). Her efforts paid off and Victoria scored 9 points in her ‘N’ Levels, qualifying her for PFP.

Choosing the PFP route has helped Victoria shine in her studies. “In secondary school there’s just a lot of memorisation and words which my brain simply cannot store up, haha! In poly, there are more presentations and practical projects, which I happen to do better in,” she says. Victoria is currently on the Director’s Honour Roll for top students, an SP Scholar and President of the SP Comperes Club (a club for emcees and hosts). Through her SP journey, Victoria was also provided with the opportunity to travel for overseas internships and community work and, providing her with a holistic education.
